DEFINITION:
VIRUS is the acronym for Vital Information Resources Under Seized. In simplest terms, a virus is a program that is loaded onto the system without our knowledge and runs against our wishes. Any program that can replicate itself can be called as a virus. Even a simple virus is dangerous because it duplicates so fast that the available memory is fully put to use and hence makes the real system processes slower.
WAYS IN WHICH VIRUSES GET INTO THE SYSTEM
There are various methods by which viruses try to get into the system. 4 popular ways are explained below.
- Mails / attachments: The easiest way to send a virus is through mails / attachments. The subject of the mail looks so attractive but we might not know the sender’s address. In such cases, it might contain a virus.
- Suspicious Links: The next source on the Internet can be clicking on unknown links. Once we click a link, Clicking on the website link might download unnecessary files along with the page details and cause illegal activities.
- Removable discs especially USB flash drives Removable discs are the next source. In the past few years, the removable discs (especially USB flash drives) are being used as a source of virus. In fact, there are many viruses exclusively for USBs. Viruses start replicating as soon as the pen drives are inserted and start their malicious activity.
- From other systems in the network This is another important mode of transmission. The viruses are spread across networks. Once a system is affected by a virus, the virus replicates itself and sends to other systems in the network thereby causing the virus activity to dominate throughout the network.
HOW TO MAKE SURE OUR SYSTEM IS SAFE
- Do not open mails / attachments if the sender is anonymous / unknown.
- Never click on links received from unknown persons.
- Coming to the USB flash drives, if a few precautionary measures are taken, then we will not get viruses very easily.
- Consider the link given below which always checks for autorun virus in USB flash drives. This has been a very useful tool because once the autorun virus is cleared off, then no virus runs by itself. So even if there is a virus, it is not active and so it doesn’t affect the system as long the file containing the virus is opened! You can download this software for free at http://downloads.zdnet.com/abstract.aspx?docid=839861&promo=100511
- Never double click on the removable disc drive to open it. Alternatively open it using Windows Explorer.
- Do not double click / open files that you are not aware of.

- Have a proper firewall always.
- Update security checks from Windows always.
HOW TO CURE YOUR SYSTEM IF A VIRUS ALREADY EXISTS
There are many antivirus softwares available in the market. A few of the best available antivirus are as follows:
- BitDefender Antivirus
- Kaspersky Antivirus
- Webroot antivirus
- G DATA Antivirus
- ESET Nod32
- ParetoLogic Antivirus
- AVG Antivirus
- Norton Antivirus
- Trend Micro Antivirus
- FSecure Antivirus
All through the years, I have found one commonality between viruses. All viruses have been created by anonymous people. There is never the name of a manufacturer. So I generally use very simple applications to remove the viruses in my computer. This commonality can be used to remove the viruses. Once we get to know the manufacturer of various processes, then we can decide which one is a true system process and which one is a virus. I recommend Security task manager in the link given here: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/. But you can use any task manager which shows the manufacturer for all the processes. So once you have a security task manager like this one, you can go to the task manager view all the processes and if there is any process which has no manufacturer, then we can end the task permanently by quarantining it!! It’s a very simple task to do and one of the best mechanisms to be free from viruses.
