In the vast web of internet, it is very common that we use search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing to dig out a topic we need information on. It is human perception and a very common pattern to access those pages first that are listed on top of a search result whenever a query is generated. This is because it is a general idea that websites that are listed first have more related material to the content that is being searched for. One must think and wonder though, how is it possible for some websites to get listed above the others when the content being searched is present in the latter links as well? The answer to this question is Search Engine Optimization (seo).
As the name suggests, Search Engine Optimization is a shrewd technique by which a particular website is ranked higher than the other links when a query is generated in any search engine. Search engines rank websites higher which have implemented this optimization technique allowing it to be displayed in the top results in a specific search. The benefit of this is the routing of high amount of traffic that can be channeled to a particular domain which can result in a steep increase in revenue.
To understand how exactly Search Engine Optimization works, we have to first look into the actions of a search engine when a query is generated. A search engine has software, called a crawler. Its main task is to sift through the web and index any new web page that it encounters during its run. A new web page might take a while before getting indexed simply because of the huge amount of data present on the internet. Once the crawler finds a page, it indexes it into a massive database. To explain the process of indexing, it is the procedure by which each webpage is recognized according to its relevance and the keywords present in it. The database serves as the store from which the information is retrieved when a user hits the enter button on a search engine. The search engine compares the user request and goes through this huge database displaying the results in an order which is most relevant and has the highest percentage of matching with the user’s keyword. Relevancy is determined by a number of ways using special algorithms which can sometimes be specific to each Search Engine. This is one factor why results may differ for the same user query on different search engines. Google, Yahoo, Bing or any other search engine usually employ different techniques to maintain uniqueness in their searching capability. However, the most common factor taken in account while searching for a user string usually includes keyword density. This is the defined as the number of times a particular word is used in an indexed link which is the same as the user’s string. Relevancy is easier to determine this way and increasing key word density is a major technique used to improve website ranking.
