web design is a very broad term; to explain it succinctly, we can say that it refers to the various procedures done in order to make a web page accessible on the internet. If the meaning is narrowed down, it can put as the tasks that are performed to build the outlook of a web page. This content can then be accessed by any user on the internet via a web browser. It is very important to mention at this point that a webpage can contain multiple types of content while being designed.
A webpage can be broken down into two distinguishable categories; the first one is the interactive part with which a user communicates while accessing the website. The second is designed for non-users and its function can be described as providing information of the webpage in question. However, there are certain rules which are defined while designing a web page to ensure uniformity in the specific codes which are generic for all web pages. In this way, the web browser can always understand certain part of the instructions regardless of how complex the rest of the structure of the web page is.
To correctly present the webpage while a user accesses it via the internet, the web designer must plug in instructions while designing the respective page. This enables the browser to go through these instructions and ensure that the web page is displayed in the format as the web designer wanted it to be. These instructions are usually written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). A newer approach has also been developed in the past few years which completely separate the outlook part from the structural information. The structural part instructions are written by the web designer in HTML whereas the visual information is done using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).
With the advancement in technology and newer methods being adopted, it is now possible to place images, flash objects and even videos on a web page. However for flash or real time applications to run the user must have a browser capable of incorporating and understanding the instructions required for it. These usually come in the form of plug-ins which can be easily downloaded from the internet.
Multiple web pages can also be created within a single website domain. Each of these pages can be considered as a separate, unique file on the website. These can then be linked together using the process of hyperlink which connects all the web pages with each other. After the completion of designing a web page, it needs to be published online so that it can be accessible to any user wanting to visit it. This can be done using any File Transfer Protocol client which is easily available on the internet.
Many tools are available online that aid in the process of designing a web page. Some of these tools are free to download while others need to be bought. Also, there is a certain skill level required for each tool as some of them are specifically indentified for professional users. These tools merely act as a medium where thoughts and ideas of a designer can be constructed in a visual form. The tools are also relatively easier to use as compared to writing instructions in a language that a web browser can understand.
The best part of web designing is that there is absolutely no limit a web designer is constrained to while designing a web page. Each website can be considered versatile and unique in its own nature and concept and with the advent of real time Flash applications; the bar has been further raised for newer, innovative ideas.
